This proposal for the architectural concept of Estonian House in Toronto, titled \u2018Vastus on PUIT\u2019, includes the partial demolition of the existing building followed by its reconstruction and extension, breathing new economic life into it and restoring the Chester School to its former glory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The modest street-facing extension is an intriguing but also light-filled and very presentable pavilion. Partly made from brick, it matches the facade of the restored school building. The hybrid structure to the rear respectfully sets itself apart from Chester School. It is something of a pioneer for its innovative CLT full-timber constructions and ground heating, showcasing \u2018green\u2019 architecture which is environmentally sustainable and whose costs will remain low throughout its lifespan. The natural smell and appearance of the timber is both attractive and suitably symbolic of Estonia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 4th and 5th floors being set back makes the building appear smaller when viewed from the south. The north-facing side connects with the tower of the apartment building adjacent to it, with the end on the valley side transforming the building into a lighthouse-like landmark that can be seen from miles around, with its own private, multi-purpose green space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
