This architectural competition aimed to find the best solution for a three-storey commercial building with an energy rating of A and the recreational area appended to it. The land on which this complex was to be constructed (at Vana-Tartu mnt 49 and Kodu tee 9a) is in the middle of Peetri and surrounded by residential buildings constructed in the last 10 years: free-standing homes, terraced houses and apartment buildings. The complex was to include a library, a food store, a hardware store, a restaurant\/caf\u00e9, offices, service spaces and a hall with attending rooms.<\/p>\n
The function and location of the building would form a new hub for the area in which to meet, talk and hold community events. The geometry employed in the shape, form and plans of the building blends in seamlessly with the character of the surrounding space. One by one, the entrances along the main facade open up like a book, highlighting the building\u2019s features. One aim was to bind the building and park together in creating spaces in which to learn and simply be and in bringing greenery into the building, with the climbing plants on the roof terrace and facades extending both up and down. Introducing plants to the reading rooms in the library was emphasised so as to improve the environment and make it more cosy.<\/p>\n
