Sirkel & Mall, in cooperation with AIMM Architects, was awarded a very prestigious 1st place in the open architectural competition for the design of Helen’s School in Tallinn.
The school is situated at Ehte 7 in the Põhja-Tallinn district. Designed for children with special needs, this complex of school and kindergarten rooms is in the middle of a fully developed part of the city. The project involved preserving and reconstructing the three-storey parts of the building (C and D blocks) and demolishing and replacing the blocks between them with a new two-storey kindergarten (L block) and corridors linking all of the blocks. The kindergarten part of the complex features a basement level to enable smoother movement between the blocks.
In designing the interior and communal areas we provided clear lines of movement and purpose, but with enough variety to guarantee the spontaneity and excitement needed for social development. Communication and well-being are further promoted in the design of the new kindergarten with the use of two skylight-topped shafts passing through both floors in the gathering and relaxation spaces. It was important in the project that similar materials be used in the interior, the architecture, the landscaping and the smaller elements of the design, so as to create a harmonious environment. A child-friendly and allergy-free indoor climate is ensured through the use of natural materials and finishes and an effective ventilation system with a good number of opening windows.
