We took part in a public competition for the conceptual design of a kindergarten in Rakke with an entry we titled ‘Siuts’. The kindergarten is small-scale, playful and child-friendly by nature and fits in seamlessly in its surroundings, which is an area of small homes with a garden-suburb feel. The main tones used were inspired by the colours of finches and are close to nature, as is characteristic of the place.
The complex is made up of two sections. The first is the more formal part at the northern end, while the second is the more playful south-facing section. The way the building is divided up in its southern section establishes areas for waiting, being, watching and playing that the children will clearly identify as their ‘own’. The different parts of the building create a playfulness suited to the environment and a friendly and diverse appearance, with all of the niches and corners one would expect and distinct entrances and classrooms with different layouts and finishes.
The lines of the building’s awning reflect the play area behind it, creating winding, impish forms on the landscape. The curvy play areas are both interspersed and connected with view corridors leading to the group rooms. The playground spaces merge with the more natural and chaotic green area to the south, which features attractions sparking curiosity and encouraging physical activity.
The overall concept of the building is for it to be simple, spacious and natural. Importance was placed on the use of ecological interior finishing materials and plants indoors to create a good interior climate. Entering Rakke from the western side, the new kindergarten and the school building across from it form a symbolic ‘gateway’ to the town.
