We took part in an open competition for the conceptual design of the Risti Kindergarten with an entry we titled ‘Väikeküla’. The kindergarten, which is planned to be built in Lääne County, is small-scale, playful and child-friendly by nature and fits in seamlessly in its surroundings, which is an area of small homes with a garden-suburb feel. Its architecture is in neutral timber tones typical of Northern Europe, with a pitched roof and gable motif that presents a new take on the similar roofs characteristic of the area.
The architectural concept is for the building to be a tranquil, child-friendly space. The building is divided up according to group modules using architectural techniques. The shape of the building imbues the main facade with a sense of spatiality by forming a courtyard which receives direct sunlight and creates a link in the use of the building’s internal and external spaces. The structure resembles a triangle, fitting into a space in one corner of the land on which it stands. The main entrance faces the courtyard, figuratively speaking in the middle of the building between two group spaces. Both of these offset blocks feature a modern asymmetrical pitched roof, creating covered areas above the entrances to the group spaces. The central part of the structure is lower and its outer wall features impish gables. These different parts of the building with their gables and the timber tones create a playfulness suited to the environment and a friendly and diverse appearance.
The shape of the planned building and its architectural roofing solutions for sun protection create good conditions for the structure to achieve an energy rating of A.
