We took part in the conceptual design competition for the Lidl store in Viljandi with an entry we titled ‘Männi’.
The new store was planned to be built at Riia mnt 1 in Viljandi. One of the defining starting points of the architectural concept was the western side of the site: the free-standing homes erected on the other side of the Riga road in around 1920 which the architectural solution for the store would have to complement. The building has a sloped roof whose lower side faces onto said road. This places it on a human scale that speaks to the small homes across the road. This in turn keeps the highly visible elevated side in the middle of the property, conveniently abutting the car park.
The 4.15 m south-facing glass facade of the store overlooks the market space, playground and recreational area. It is crowned with a ca 3.5 m projecting eave which curves around towards the car park. The layout of the building is straightforward and functional, following the standard Lidl design.
