The design process for the reconstruction of this, one of Tallinn’s most iconic buildings, began in August 2019. As the lead designer, our task was to provide everything from draft plans to working plans for the architectural and interior architecture aspects of the project, as well as principal plans for structural engineering and technical systems.
The source data for our designs came from the 45,000 m2 building’s point cloud model and the brief provided by the client.
Many people, companies and organisations are involved in making a success of the project, which will stem from cooperation between everyone on the design team.
A good project is only brought to fruition when all parties are included: the client, the designers and the users, all of whom share the goal of finding the best solution for what is a very complex building.
The project has involved more than 85 architects and engineers, the management and staff of the library itself and of the National Archives, Riigi Kinnisvara AS as the well-informed client, leading researchers from TalTech as consultants on the interior climate of the library’s repositories, and specialists from the Tallinn Heritage Protection Department.
Once construction is complete, the building’s new-look terraces and the functional changes to its interior architecture will enable the complex to be opened up as a part of urban space, raising the quality of the entire surrounding living environment.
